History

Since prehistoric times, the Columbus area has hosted a succession of Creek and Mound Builder tribes that farmed, fished and hunted its fertile hinterland. During the late 18th century, Columbus became a small but crucial trade center on the old Federal Road as well as an inland port for traffic on the Chattahoochee River. During the early 19th century, it contributed to the development of Georgia’s cotton and textile industries. After sustaining serious damage during the Civil War, the city slowly rebuilt and became known as a service center for the surrounding area. Today, it benefits from the proximity of Fort Benning and several major industrial facilities.

Geography

Columbus is located in west-central Georgia. It’s directly across the Chattahoochee River from Phenix City, Ala., and stands as the county seat of Muscogee County. As a consolidated city-county, Columbus encompasses a massive land area and boasts huge swathes of rural land. Closer to its historic core, it sports concentric rings of 20th-century housing developments around a well-preserved Victorian district. A significant industrial area spreads along its riverfront. Like much of west-central Georgia, Columbus is characterized by a gently rolling landscape and ample tree cover.

Population and Demographics

Columbus has a population of about 200,000. Thanks to its decision to annex the surrounding communities of Muscogee County, Columbus has grown rapidly over the past several decades. Many new residents live in attractive, low-density subdivisions on the outskirts of its developed area. Others gravitate to lofts and townhomes near its historic core. As a regional trade center for a wide swathe of west-central Georgia and east-central Alabama, Columbus draws blue-collar workers, financial professionals and students in equal measure.

Between May and September, daytime highs routinely exceed 90 degrees and accompany oppressively humid conditions. The transitional seasons tend to be cooler, but the threat of severe weather persists throughout much of the year. Columbus’s winters are cool and rainy.
